AIADMK gets ready to fix Lok Sabha poll formula
CHENNAI: As political parties start exploring their Lok Sabha poll alliance options, the ruling AIADMK has planned to convene a meeting of its district secretaries and party MPs next week to discuss its likely alliance options and the floor strategy for the Parliament session to begin on July 18.
Chennai
The meeting assumes significance as it comes a week after BJP national president Amit Shah indirectly attacked the AIADMK government and asserted that his party would form an alliance which fights corruption in the state. Although, Union Minister of State Pon Radhakrishnan had been consistently flaying the state government on law and order issue, this is the first time a national leader of the saffron party had openly hit out at the government on law and order, besides corruption.
Although, Amit Shah had stated that his party’s poll tie-up would be decided in October, the AIADMK needs to tune its strategy according to the changing situation.
The ruling party’s immediate task would be to devise a floor strategy during the Parliament session to demonstrate that the BJP needed its support since the former has 37 Lok Sabha MPs and 13 Rajya Sabha members. In case of early Parliament polls, this will be the last session of the present Lok Sabha.
The AIADMK district secretaries’ meeting will be held in the morning to elicit the views of party leaders on the possible alliances for the Parliament elections. The party organ had come out with attacks on the BJP thrice on NEET, Cauvery, besides backing the black flag protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, none of the party leaders had spoken against the BJP on those issues and had only blamed the opposition DMK.
The AIADMK leaders are aware that the saffron party needs its support during the Parliament session when the TDP is likely to bring a no-confidence motion against the Union government. During the budget session, AIADMK MPs stalled the proceedings demanding the formation of Cauvery Management Board. The opposition parties charged the AIADMK with disrupting the proceedings to avoid a no confidence vote.
Besides, the BJP wants AIADMK support when the election for Rajya Sabha vice-chairman is held since it has 13 members who could swing the poll outcome. It is expected that the party will also discuss the recruitment and renewal of members which has been dragging for a long time.
