The project would change the view of the Rockfort, Theppakulam, Purathanam Park, Municipal Chattiram, Main Guard Gate and the World War I memorial in the city significantly.
The Rockfort temple and fort built in the seventh century is one of the major tourist attractions in the city and as per the programme, the iconic temple, along with the Main Guard Gate and the World War 1 memorial (popularly known as Clock Tower) will get LED illumination.
Meanwhile, Thepakulam, the temple tank located at the foot of the Rockfort temple will get a major infrastructural boost as steps will be constructed around this tank and pedestrian walkways will also be built.
Similarly, the Purathana park, used in the Rani Mangammal period (1689-1704) for keeping horses and Nayara period (1704-1731) as horseshoe stable, will have a historically-themed maze displaying the history of the Pallavas, Cholas and other kingdoms.
According to the officials, the city would get this major facelift before 2021. “The high-power committee has already approved the project. The tender for these projects will be floated and efforts will be taken for their time-bound execution,” said N Ravichandran, Commissioner, Tiruchy City Corporation.
