Move to shift law college challenged
Students part of the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College functioning in the Madras High Court campus has moved the MHC challenging the government decision to shift it to different colleges in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.
Chennai
The division bench comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice V Parthiban before whom a batch of petitions challenging the decision came up sought to know as to what harm it could cause in shifting a law college to a rural area when many medical and engineering colleges function around the same area. However, with the arguments in the case remaining inconclusive, the bench posted to matter to Friday.
Earlier, advocate N G R Prasad appearing on behalf of some of the students submitted the contradictions of the PWD in giving a chit earlier to the 127-year-old heritage building and subsequently claiming that it is in a dilapidated condition requiring repair.
Also, citing previous judgments in this regard, Prasad contended that none of the judgments had directed the shifting of the college for good, but instead had only insisted on its closure until the repairs are completed.
Also, on citing the lack of facilities and robbing the students of their proximity to the MHC, which involves practical training similar to hospitals being set up in medical colleges, he noted that both the colleges have not obtained any approval from Bar Council of India and, the students would be transferred to unrecognised colleges.
To this, Justice Parthiban pointed out that the colleges are not new and that a mere shift of campus is happening.
