    Escaped prisoner held in 24 hours

    A prisoner, who escaped from custody after being arrested on Monday for allegedly throwing his two children into a well, was caught within 24 hours on Tuesday night in Chennai.

    Muniappan (35), a barber of Ganapathynagar near Arakkonam, had frequent quarrels with his wife as he was not regular to work. Upset over one such quarrel, his wife Radha (30) left her two children Deepak (7) and Ruban (3) with Muniappan and went to her mother’s house near Kancheepuram. The children became a hindrance to Muniappan as he could not go out freely. Enraged by this, Muniappan threw both his kids into a farm well. While Ruban drowned, Deepak, who knew swimming, managed to climb out and informed neighbours who complained to Thakkolam police. 

    Subsequently, Muniappan was arrested from his relative’s house at Ganapathy Nagar on Monday. However, Muniappan escaped from police custody on Monday night. Vellore SP P Pagalavan forming a special team to nab him. 

    Acting on a tip-off about Muniappan’s hideout, the special team rushed to a house at Padi in Chennai and nabbed him. Later, he was brought to Thakkolam on Tuesday night. Pagalavan lauded the special team members for arresting the escaped prisoner within 24 hours. Further investigations are on.

    Man gets jail term for setting wife ablaze 

    The Tiruvannamalai mahila court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life for setting his wife ablaze as she objected to his extra marital affair. Ramesh (40) of Mel Chengam was married to Inbajothi (36). Later, he developed an affair with Kamakshi (26) of the same locality. Inbajothi objected to his relationship and this led to frequent quarrels between the couple. Enraged by his wife’s behaviour, Ramesh asked Kamakshi to come to his house on April 18, 2013 and as anticipated Inbajothi picked up a quarrel. During the course of the argument Ramesh poured kerosene on his wife and set her ablaze. Melchengam police registered a case and arrested him.
