As soon as the monthly grievances meet chaired by Collector T Anbalagan commenced, a section of farmers claimed that the dying units have been releasing effluents in Noyyal, which flows through the textile city of Tirupur before entering Karur district.
Stating that the polluted water poses a major health threat, Rajamani, a farmer, said, “The district administration should take up the issue with the Tirupur authorities and issue a strict warning to the culprits.” Meanwhile, P Jayachandran, another farmer, complained that the desilted soil (vandal) dug up by farmers in Chinnamutham Palayam is being transported to brick kilns with the support of local politicians.
In response, Collector Anbalagan said that severe action would initiated against those who transport the soil to brick kilns. He said that the vandal soil is meant as a fertilizer to be utilised only for agricultural lands. The farmers later submitted a petition to Anbalagan demanding that he take measures to release water from Amaravathi dam for cultivating crops.
