The workshop aimed at enhancing the skills required for improving performance of the officials involved in the enforcement of the anti-drug laws. Also, it intended to empower the ICG personnel in smuggling and illicit trafficking of narcotics and psychotrophic substance through sea route, the Deputy Inspector General and Commanding Officer, SB Venkatesh said.
Last year, the ICG had foiled bids of smuggling of around 500 kilos of ganja.
Intensified patrolling along the east coast with the aid of ICG vessels including ‘Vaibhav’, ‘Abhiraj’ and ‘Aadesh’, and round the clock radar surveillance from stations at Keelakarai, Manapad, Pandian Theevu and Kanniyakumari ensure prevention of unlawful activities carried out through sea routes, he added.
At the workshop, an NCB official briefed those attending about the activities of international drug cartels, their modus operandi and their networks in the country.
The training schedule covered the various methods to detect, identify and seize drugs. It also discussed the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotrophic Substance (NDPS) Act 1985 and the penalties imposed under the Act.
