Threatened by ex-lover, girl jumps off 2nd floor

According to police sources, the girl Vani (name changed) suffered fractures in hip bones and doctors are contemplating a surgery. Following this, police have arrested the accused Manikandan (26) under Sections 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998, and 506(1) of the Indian Penal Code (criminal intimidation).

The teenager Vani, a BCom student at a city college and a resident of Anna Street in Madhavaram, is said to have been involved in a relationship with her neighbour Manikandan. He is working as the driver of a school bus, police sources added.

In the recent months, Vani started avoiding Manikandan which infuriated him. Refusing to let her go, he started harassing her for the past three months, demanding that she marry him. Finally, her father approached the local police with a complaint against Manikandan. However, after finding out during their enquiry that the families were known to each other, the police sent him off with a stern warning against pestering her.

On Tuesday night, Manikandan reached Vani’s house in an inebriated condition. He claimed that he had photos of them together, and threatened to publish them on social media if she refused to marry him.

Distraught by this, Vani ran to the second floor of her home and tried to kill herself by jumping down. In an attempt to save her, the girl’s father who had followed her upstairs also jumped. Both are undergoing treatment, said police. Further investigation is on.
