    State plans department for folklore studies

    The state has planned to set up a separate department for folklore studies in Government Music College in Thiruvaiyaru, said Tamil Official Language Minister K Pandiarajan.

    The Leader of Opposition MK Stalin and his party colleague Durai Chandrasekaran drew the state’s attention wanting to know whether the government was planning considering the option to set up such a department to publicise the folklore from the region. 

    Pandiarajan, in his reply, said that the state was mulling the option of setting up an exclusive department in the Thiruvaiyaru Music College for the benefit of the students who wish to learn such multi-faceted arts. 

    “At present, the artists, who are from the region, are keeping such art forms in flourish. Since these rich and multi-faceted art forms reflect on its art repository of the people of Chola region, it is widely performed around Thanjavur,” the Minister said. 

    “Three-year degrees on folk arts were being offered by Madurai and Chennai government music colleges to preserve these arts which not only reflects the rich Tamil culture but also acts as a tool to shape the race’s socio-economic thoughts,” he added while he trotted out a long list of programmes offered by the music colleges in the state.
