After Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami officially announced that AIIMS would be setup in Madurai, Udayakumar and Madurai Collector K Veera Raghav Rao went for inspection at the proposed site at K Pudhupatti village in Thoppur. They were joined by Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, who visited Madurai Airport in the afternoon.

The Ministers and the Collector reviewed the site with the help of the map of AIIMS and the facilities which would be set up on the land. Following that, Udayakumar addressing the media, in which he said that bringing AIIMS to Tamil Nadu was the dream of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. He also claimed that in the assembly, she had passed an order under section 110 to set up AIIMS in Madurai.

Also in the Thirupparankundram by-election, the ruling party had promised that the AIIMS would be setup in Thirupparankundram constituency and as promised, the hospital will now come to Thirupparankundram, in which Thoppur is located. He also thanked Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam for taking efforts to bring AIIMS to Madurai and said that people of Madurai will never forget the service of these two leaders.

Madurai Airport is just 15 kilometres away from the proposed site of the AIIMS and that the Madurai Railway Junction is just 14 kilometres away, Udayakumar said. All facilities that favour setting up of the AIIMS are already there in Madurai and once it is set up, people from 19 districts would be benefited, he added.

Pon Radhakrishnan said the setting up of AIIMS in Madurai is a historical event and people of southern districts should celebrate the setting up of AIIMS in Madurai like a festival as it will benefit people of all the southern districts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be thanked for bringing AIIMS to Madurai, he said.
