Revealing the Centre’s decision here on Tuesday, Revenue minister RB Udhayakumar said the Centre has sent the order to the State government, asking it to set up the necessary infrastructure, including water and power supply, and good road facilities, the minister said while addressing a public meeting in Tirumangalam on Tuesday.

The Centre had agreed to set up a satellite unit of the institute in Tamil Nadu, but a final decision on the site was delayed for long. According to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, the State government had recommended five spots, which were inspected by a team from AIIMS.

Finally, Madurai and Thanjavur were shortlisted but a final decision took months to come. He added that along with Jallikattu, Cauvery and closure of Sterlite, AIIMS is another success story for the State.
