Sulphuric acid leak detected in Sterlite plant
Sterlite Copper is once again in the news for the wrong reasons. This time, it is because of a sulphuric acid leakage from one of the containers inside the plant. The incident was reported on Saturday. However, Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Nanduri said that the leakage was minor and corrective measures would commence on Monday.

After the May 22 anti-Sterlite protest turned violent, killing 13 people, the State government had issued a Government Order(GO) calling for ‘permanent closure’ of the plant and it was thereby sealed.
Subsequently, only policemen were stationed inside the plant for security. On Saturday evening, the cops informed Nanduri about the leakage and he, in turn, summoned officials from the Revenue Department, TNPCB, Fire and Rescue Department and police officers for a meeting.
After the meeting, a team headed by Thoothukudi sub-collector Prasad, went inside the plant and carried out an inspection and found that sulphuric acid had leaked from one of the storage containers.
The Collector said that the leakage happened sans any external influence. With power shut down, corrective work could not be undertaken before Monday, he said. The work will take only a day to complete and the container could also be removed from the premises if necessary, the Collector noted.
