Subbarayan, Veerapandian elected deputy secretaries of CPI State unit
They were elected at the three-day CPI State Executive and Council meeting, which concluded on Wednesday night. Also, former MLA M Arumugham was elected treasurer. CPI national secretaries D Raja and Dr Narayana were present during the meeting.

Former Members of Parliament K Subbarayan and M Veerapandian were unanimously elected deputy secretaries of Communist Party of India’s Tamil Nadu unit.
They were elected at the three-day CPI State Executive and Council meeting, which concluded on Wednesday night. Also, former MLA M Arumugham was elected treasurer. CPI national secretaries D Raja and Dr Narayana were present during the meeting.
R Mutharasan had already been elected the party’s Tamil Nadu unit secretary during its state conference held at Mannargudi in March last. Mutharasan, Subbarayan and Veerapandian were among those elected to the State Council, party sources said.
A 31-member State Executive Committee, which will have three-year tenure, was also formed, they added.
Left calls for local body elections in Pondy
The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India on Thursday urged the government to take immediate steps to hold local body election in the Union Territory.
Addressing newspersons here, CPI State Secretary Saleem said the Supreme Court has directed to hold the election in eight weeks, of which five weeks had already passed. The government has not done any preliminary works in this regard so far, he said, adding that immediate steps be taken to delimit the wards, ensure reservation and appoint State Election Commissioner to hold the poll, he said.
Saleem the CPI would undertake a campaign on the issue at 30 centres in Puducherry and Karaikal from June 20 to 30. He also said that the party would hold agitations in all constituencies here on June 20 to press the Centre to curb the price of petrol, diesel and LPG.
On the ATM fraud case, he said that a legislator was also involved in the case and a criminal case must be registered against him.
