    Manonmaniam Sundaranar University offers free PG courses in Tamil

    In bid to increase admission for post graduation (PG) in Tamil medium courses, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, run by the Tamil Nadu Government, has made a unique announcement that no fees will be charged for the students joining PG classes from this academic year.

    The university, which is situated in rural milieu of southern Tamil Nadu, is named after the renowned Tamil poet P Sundaram Pillai, the author of famous verse drama Manonmaniam.

    The university registrar Dr S Santhosh Baboo said that in the past few years there has been a continuous decline in the number of students, especially from the southern districts, who want to pursue PG courses in Tamil.

    “As this trend will affect the development of Tamil, for the first time, the university has decided to give free PG education to the students from this year,” he said. “The students should utilize this rare opportunity for joining the courses.”

    The university is offering PG courses in Tamil in various fields including masters is History. The university has 77 affiliated colleges, six university colleges and four constituent colleges with 1,10,470 students in regular mode and 10,490 students in distance mode under its jurisdiction.

    The institution was setup with an aim to cater to the needs of a university and an affiliating body for the southern most districts of the state including Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.

    The Tamil Nadu government also introduced a scheme of awarding a stipend of Rs 400 per student per annum recently to encourage the students of government and government aided colleges to study in Tamil medium.
