    Anna University to receive Rs 16 crore fund

    Department of Science and Technology (DST) has recognized 16 department s of Anna University which are to receive the fund for infrastructural grants amounting to a total of Rs 16 crore under the “Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure Scheme” (ISTIS) .

    The DST also recognised the university as eligible to receive grains under the “Promoting University Research in Scientific Excellence (PURSE)”.

    The funds from the schemes will support the university departments for five years, for augmentation of post-graduate teaching and research facilities in four areas such as basic equipment, networking and computational facilities, research infrastructure and maintenance of equipment.

    Apart from support for basic equipment necessary for imparting quality teaching and modernization of laboratories provided to a large number of departments, support for creation of a few major facilities has also been provided.

    The major facilities include Ion Chromatography Systems, Automated DNA Sequencers, Ultracentrifuges, Scanning Probe Microscope, Oligonucleotide Synthesizer and Molecular Imaging System.

    Accordingly, the Project Implementation Group (PIG) is being constituted which comprises of faculty members who will be responsible and accountable for the smooth implementation of the project.

    However, no support was made available for the building and civil construction related activities under the PURSE initiative. The decision of utilization of grants across different departments of the Anna University to be taken solely by the university.

    After receiving the grant by the DST authorities will review the technical and financial progress including utilization of the grant on an annual basis with an appropriate mechanism. The department reserves the right to terminate the support at any stage if it is convinced that the grant has not been properly utilized or appropriate progress is not being made.
