Farmers, led by P Ayyakannu, state president of Desiya Thennindiya Nadigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, who besieged the office of the executive engineer of the PWD (river conservation), demanded release of water for areas like Pullambadi, Lalgud, Mannachanallur and Musiri region, which have dried up and the farmers are experiencing difficulties in providing water to their cattle.
They demanded water to be released from Mukkombu (Upper Anaicut), so that the waterbodies like Ayyan Vaical, Peruvalai Vaical and Pullambadi as it would help vast acres of farmlands, which were getting ready to raise Kuruvai, in the region. Farmers said that they would not disperse from the spot unless the executive engineer gives an assurance on the release of water.
Assistant Executive Engineer Sivakumar held talks with the protesting farmers and assured to release water by evening.
However, the protest continued in front of the office. “Even after the apex court has ordered Karnataka to release 4 TMC to Tamil Nadu, the neighbouring state refused to heed the orders. This resulted in a lot of hardships and even the cattle were struggling without adequate water,” Ayyakannu said.
Later, the farmers submitted a petition to the district Collector listing their demands and dispersed.
