Vaiko raises doubts over permanent closure of Sterlite unit based on TNPCB report alone

MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Thursday said it is not legally right to close Sterlite unit based on Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board report. “If the closure is made only on the Pollution Control Board’s report, then there is a possibility for it to reopen. Instead, the government should issue a closure order only by convening the Assembly and explaining the reasons behind the action,” he said.

Slamming the double standards of Sterlite management, Vaiko questioned why Anil Agarwal of Sterlite did not move the court when it came under attack at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.

“Similarly P Ramnath, CEO of Sterlite Copper, has termed the protesters as anti-socials and were funded by some organisations. Even I am taking part in many protests. So does that mean I am also an anti-social? He should hold his tongue and shouldn’t express such nasty comments,” he said.

The MDMK leader also said Tamil Nadu will never allow the functioning of Sterlite. Later, while driving through Palakkad Road near Madukkarai in Coimbatore outskirts, Vaiko noticed the public rescuing a youth, trapped in a mangled car that crashed into a lorry.

He immediately stopped his vehicle and co-ordinated the rescue works and also spoke to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) doctors, while asking them to take better care of the severely injured youth.
