In the police firing that happened on May 22, 13 people died and in the FIRs, it was mentioned that the order for firing was issued by two Deputy Tahsildars. As many as 10 petitions were filed in the Madurai Bench in connection with the firing and though some of the petitions had different prayers, they were clubbed by the court and were heard on Wednesday.
In the previous hearing, when the state government was asked to file a report on the steps taken regarding the firing incident, the government had submitted that a Government Order appointing a one-member Judicial Commission headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan has been issued, but the bench was not satisfied with the reply and directed the state government to file a detailed report on the firing incident.
On Wednesday, when the case was heard, the public prosecutor submitted a report in which it was stated that the order for firing was issued by two Deputy Tahsildars who were present at the spot after consultation with the Tahsildar. Based on the report, justices CT Selvam and Basheer Ahmed directed the two Deputy Tahsildars and the Tahsildar to be added as respondents in the case and directed them to file a detailed report on the firing and what prompted them to issue the firing order on May 22.
