    The NHRC members were at the Corporation West Zone Building in the town and the family members deposed before them from the morning and informed the commission about the events that transpired on May 22.

    The kin of Karthick, Kandiah, Shanmugam, Ranjith Kumar, Jansi and Kaliappan appeared before the panel with their ID cards.

    The rights panel team also visited the Thoothukudi Government Hospital and met with the injured persons.

    Earlier, seven persons had deposed before the NHRC and explained to it about the events on May 22. Collector Sandeep Nanduri was also inquired by the NHRC team on Sunday.

    The NHRC had earlier sent summons to the families of all the deceased to appear before the commission and explain what happened on the day of the police firing.

    The NHRC team arrived in Thoothukudi on Saturday and commenced its investigation in the evening. The team members visited the Collectorate campus and examined the damaged vehicles and the public propertydestroyed in the violence.

    The May 22 firing incident in which 13 people died created outrage across the country and the NHRC took up the issue.

    It had announced that it would send a fact-finding team to Thoothukudi to probe the incident. The team comprised five members and was led by an officer of the rank of Senior Superintendent.

    The team was led by Bhubhul P Prasad, and it comprised of Rajvir Singh, DSP, Nithin Kumar, Arun Tyagi and Lal Bahar, all three inspectors.

    Snowlin’s body handed over to kin
    After prolonged persuasion b officials, the kin of Snowlin, the 17-yearold girl who was killed in the police firing in Thoothukudi on May 22, accepted her the body on Sunday. Later, special prayers were conducted and final rites were performed for her following which she was buried.
    Snowlin was shot in her mouth and had died on the spot. Following the incident, an autopsy was conducted immediately, but the High Court had directed the doctors to conduct a re-postmortem of the bodies. Initially, autopsy was conducted on only seven bodies and Snowlin’s was among them.
