‘Declare Rameswaram temple Third Pragaram as heritage site’
Political parties and people of Rameswaram have demanded that the state and central governments declare the ‘Third Pragaram’ (corridor) of the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram, as a heritage site.
Madurai
One of the key aspects of the Ramanathaswamy temple is the Third Pragaram. It’s considered the longest in the world with 1,212 identical pillars. The height and the width — 22 feet and 7 feet respectively — is uniform for all the pillars.
The Third Pragaram was constructed by King Muthuramalinga Sethupathy, between 1740 and 1770. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department is maintaining the Pragaram and it attracts a large number of foreign tourists too.
However, to make it more famous, the political parties have urged the state and the central governments to announce the Third Pragaram as a heritage site. Speaking to DT Next, Ramamoorthy, Hindu Munnani functionary from Rameswaram, said that when the Third Pragaram is declared as a heritage site, it would attract a large amount of fund for maintenance and a large number of devotees from across the world.
