Petitioner Muthu Amuthanathan, General Secretary, All India Advocates Union, in his petition, had stated that the presence of Sterlite Copper affected many people in Thoothukudi, and many were also diagnosed with cancer, hence the protests against the company.

The petitioner also prayed for a murder case to be filed against State Chief Secretary, DGP, Tirunelveli DIG, Thoothukudi SP, Thoothukudi Collector, Inspector at Thoothukudi SIPCOT, as protocol had been breached.

Another petition with a similar prayer was also filed at Madurai Bench. Petitioner, Kandakumar, from Thoothukudi, stated that a committee under retired HC Judge be appointed to investigate the police firing and Rs 50 lakh for the deceased and Rs 10 lakh for the injured be given as compensation. Both petitions were clubbed and the division bench had earlier directed the state to file counter for both the petitions. However, the State on Friday filed just the government order on the appointment of a one-man Commission headed by Aruna Jegadeesh on the firing.
