Vellore man puzzled as staff seeks PAN card for speed post package
What does a PAN card, a identification key for tracking every financial transaction of a person, got to do with the postal department? Well, as per the ordeal that a Vellore man was put through, the card, according to the department employees, is mandatory to receive a speed post package.
Vellore
It all started when D Dinesh, a local IT/sales tax practitioner, received a cheque book from his bank through speed post. The post man attached to the Sathuvachary sub post office reportedly told Dinesh, who was new to the locality, that he would get his package only on production of Aadhaar card and the rent agreement signed with his house owner.
When Dinesh approached the post office with the rent agreement and Aadhaar card, the sub post master (in-charge) Muruganandam, demanded his PAN card without which he said the package would not be handed over.
On Monday, Dinesh and a consumer activist Sathyamurthy went to the post office to show the PAN card. However, Muruganandam reportedly told them, “We will send the documents to the Vellore head post office from where officials will cross-check the identity.”
This led to Sathyamurthy contacting the Post Master General (Chennai region) and other senior officials, all of whom acknowledged that there was no need for the PAN card when rental agreement and Aadhaar card are produced.
When contacted, Vellore superintendent of posts K Vijaya told DTNext that Muruganandam would be asked to explain the reason for his action. However, despite all these efforts, Dinesh is yet to get his cheque book.
