Though the sea continued to remain rough in Dhanushkodi for the second consecutive day on Wednesday and tourists were not allowed into the island, the cyclone warning issued earlier has been withdrawn in Pamban Port.
Chennai
Fishermen have been asked to refrain from venturing into the sea. The ban on visiting Dhanushkodi was enforced on Wednesday, for the second consecutive day.
Despite the rough sea and high tides, the cyclone warning number one issued at Pamban Port was withdrawn. It was issued on Tuesday. An official at Rameswaram said there is no longer any threat because of the cyclone. If needed, the warning can be reissued later, said the official.
Meanwhile, due to cyclone ‘Mekunu’, most parts of southern Tamil Nadu had been witnessing rainfall in the past few days and it had led to a fall in the mercury level in the region. Dindigul and Kanniyakumari districts received the maximum rainfall and because of it, the water level in most waterbodies has risen.
In Kanniyakumari district, more than 750 ponds are filled to capacity and around 500 more are about to reach the maximum level. Similarly, Kodaikanal too received good rainfall and because of it, the Kumbakarai falls in Theni district is overflowing.
Similarly, in Courtallam the season has commenced with the onset of the Southwest monsoon.
However, in the nights, as the water flow increases, the tourists are banned from bathing in the waterfalls.
Andaman flights affected
Three flights to Port Blair from Chennai were delayed up to three hours following bad weather at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. More than 400 passengers were forced to wait at the Chennai airport due to heavy rains in the islands.
The delay happened as the runway at the Port Blair airport was flooded completely due to heavy rain. The airport was shut down completely till Wednesday morning.
