Vaiko asks EPS to quit, warns of siege if plant reopens

Terming the announcement by the state government to close Sterlite plant as a mere eyewash, MDMK leader Vaiko sought Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to quit owning responsibility for the police gunning down 13 anti-Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi.

Speaking to media at Coimbatore airport on Tuesday, Vaiko said the AIADMK government is enacting a drama of closing down the Sterlite plant. “Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa issued a similar closure order after I moved the court.

However, the Supreme Court allowed it to function later,” he said. Vaiko said he wouldn’t let Sterlite reopen this time and will lay siege to the plant to curb its operations by mobilising one lakh people.

“Sterlite was working behind my defeat in every election. They also had spread rumours in social media that I took Rs 52 crore from them and mocked at my battle against similar anti-people projects. I had filed a complaint in this regard,” he said.

Blaming the state government to have played the main role in the killing of anti-Sterlite protesters, Vaiko said the Chief Minister should resign from his post bearing responsibility for the deaths.

Calling the TN government a puppet in the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vaiko said violence during protests cannot be justified as a reason for the shootings as not just a single cop was found injured.

“The state government has wantonly sent the Collector to Kovilpatti to execute the mass killing. A woman, who was taking food for her daughter has been gunned down.

Finally, they made a Tahshildar as a scapegoat by laying the blame on him for the shootout,” he said. Vaiko added that the ministers are visiting Thoothukudi only with police presence unable to face the seething anger of the public.
