4 TN fishermen rescued off Karnataka coast
Four fishermen from Tamil Nadu were rescued by the Coast Guard in Karwar after their boat capsized in heavy rain and wind that lashed the coastal areas of Karnataka under the influence of a cyclone in the Arabian Sea.
Six fishermen had ventured into the sea despite warnings and were returning after fishing when their boat capsized in the huge waves. However, the Coast Guard rescued four fishermen. Â
A search is on for two others who are missing. In Udupi district, a holiday was declared for schools and colleges for two days, including Tuesday, due to heavy rain which threw normal life out of gear. The district has been receiving heavy rain over the last two days and according to Met office sources, the rain will continue for the next 48 hours.Â
Most affected were people living in the low-lying areas as the flood waters entered almost all streets and houses. Movement of vehicles has been badly affected as the flood waters are flowing at a height of more than 2 ft. Power outages crippled most areas as electricity poles had fallen and trees were uprooted in the gusty winds.Â
Official sources said the damage can be assessed only after the situation turns normal. Boats have been kept on standby to shift the affected people to safer places.
