Rameswaram is a famous tourist destination and thousands flock to the island everyday to enjoy the temple, beaches and Dhanushkodi as well as the Kalam National Memorial.

To reach Rameswaram, the Pamban bridge is the only route available and the bridge itself is a popular spot. The view of the sea from the bridge is enthralling and the tourists usually stop their vehicles on the bridge and take photos of them with the sea in the background.

The opening and closing of the bascule bridge of the Pamban rail bridge is another event that is popular among the tourists. Ships passing the bridge is a scene that no tourist would want to miss.

However, they risk their as well as the lives of their children by taking dangerous photographs and selfies. The tourists place their children on the walls of the bridge and take photos. Though a slight shake would result in the kids falling into the sea, the parents do not seem to

    realise it.

As it is vacation time, more number of tourists visit the Pamban bridge and taking selfies by standing on the edge of the parapet. Though police constables are deployed in the vicinity, the tourists do not listen to them while taking photos.

Recently, police had introduced a fine of Rs 500 for vehicles parked on the Pamban bridge, but the rule is not implemented properly. If it is enforced, such risks could be avoided. On many occasions, fishermen warn the tourists not to take selfies in a dangerous manner.
