Operation of buses was stopped to Ariyalur district from Friday night. The bus stands in Ariyalur, Jayankondam, Thirumanur and Sendurai were deserted without the bus services from Chennai and neighbouring districts.
A dozen buses were attacked on Saturday and police arrested 12 people, three from Jayankondam and nine from Andimadam in Ariyalur district. Shops remained closed in most places of Kumbakonam, Swamimalai, Tirupananthal and Thiruvidaimaruthur in Thanjavur district.
Buses from Kumbakonam to Chennai were diverted via Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram.
In the meantime, miscreants pelted stones at the TNSTC buses at Tirunarayur in Tiruvarur-Kumbakonam section and at Puliyampettai in Chennai –Kumbakonam section.
Meanwhile, 19 buses, including six in Vellore, 11 in Tiruvannamalai and two in Puducherry, were damaged on Saturday in incidents of stone pelting following the death of the former PMK MLA from Ariyalur. Vellore TNSTC sources revealed that buses stopped plying from the early hours of Saturday. Services resumed later in the day. Buses were damaged at Latheri, Mel Visharam, Arcot, Wallajahpet and Arakkonam in Vellore, while in Tiruvannamalai incidents were reported from Kalasapakkam, Vandavasi, Arni,
Polur and Cheyyar. Similarly, shops in areas like Vandavasi, Arni and Padavedu near Kannamangalam in Tiruvannamalai, downed their shutters.
In Puducherry, masked miscreants attacked a Tamil Nadu and a Puducherry Road Transport Corporation bus at Ariyankuppam. Mohan Raj, the driver of the PRTC bus sustained injuries. Several private buses remained off road.
