Parties stage protests against firing incident
Condemning the firing deaths during the protest against the Sterlite company in Thoothukudi, various political parties staged agitations in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts on Thursday.

Cadre belonging to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Communist Party of India (CPI) raised slogans against the police, claiming that they were responsible for the deaths. They also condemned against the AIADMK government-led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami. Later, all the protesters were arrested when they tried to block the road at Muthukadai in Ranipet.
Similarly, PMK cadre staged demonstrations at the Padavedu bus stand in Tiruvannamalai district and CPI cadre at Tirupatthur demanding action against the police who were responsible for the deaths in Thoothukudi.
Nearly 100 employees of Bharat Heavy Electricals’s (BHEL) boiler auxiliaries plant (BAP) at Ranipet staged demonstration against the indiscriminate killing of the protesters, in addition to demanding the total closure of the Sterlite plant for which the Thoothukudi residents were protesting for years.
While Tamil Maanila Congress workers paid homage to those killed at Thoothukudi, CPI cadre blocked the road near the government Anna Kalai Arangam on Officer’s Line. However, they were subsequently removed by the police.
3 MLAs hold demo against Stalin’s arrest
Three DMK MLAs, including P Karthikeyan (Vellore), JL Eswarappan (Arcot) and R Gandhi (Ranipet), were arrested when they along with their supporters protested in Vellore on Thursday condemning the arrest of DMK working president and Leader of Opposition MK Stalin in Chennai and the firing incident at Thoothukudi.
While Gandhi and Eswarappan were arrested in Ranipet, Karthikeyan was arrested in Vellore. At Ranipet, the MLAs and nearly 200 of their supporters shouted slogans against the Thoothukudi police firing.
The protesters criticised the state and central governments and demanded the closure of the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi.
They also sought action against the police personnel responsible for the killings. While more than 200 were arrested in Ranipet, another 100 were arrested in Vellore.
