Nirmala case: AIDWA to move Supreme Court seeking CBI probe

Demanding a fair probe in the Nirmala Devi scandal, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), the women’s wing of the CPM, has decided to approach the Supreme Court to request it to shift the case from the CB-CID to the CBI.

Addressing the media here, U Vasuki, National Vice-President of AIDWA, on Sunday said as far as the issue is concerned, Nirmala Devi is neither the first person nor the final one in the case as it is leading to several others involved in the incident.

The scandal shows that people need not have education or skills to come up in life, but could follow shortcuts to succeed. In the process, some of the students were also misused by the lecturers for their own benefit but the good thing is that the students have come forward against the tainted assistant professor, she said.

When the matter surfaced, it was initially announced that the CB-CID would probe it, but immediately its chief was transferred. It showed that the state government had no intention to ensure justice, she said.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed the Santhanam Committee to probe the matter, but when the Governor himself was named by Nirmala in the conversation, how can he appoint a committee, she wondered. Also in the press meet, Purohit said there is no restriction on inquiring him, but Santhanam said he won’t question him. So there are no clear instructions issued to the panel, she added.

Hence, the AIDWA would file a case in the Supreme Court, seeking to transfer the case to the CBI and would urge the court to monitor the trial, added Vasuki.
