Federation welcomes new education administration system
With the State government restructuring the administrative powers of field-level officers of the School Education department, the directors of secondary and elementary education and matriculation school have been asked to submit proposals to ensure that Block Education Officers (BEO), a newly-created position, are able to function without problems.

Sources said that the move by the government has been made to resolve jurisdiction issues, while streamlining the existing hierarchy of officials.
Accordingly, the chief educational officers (CEO) will continue as heads of revenue districts. However, it is the existing post of the Assistant Elementary Education Officer (AEEO), lowest in the rung, which would undergo a change, said TN Vocational Teachers Federation general secretary S N Janardhanan.
The new system would ensure that BEOs become the lower-level supervisory officers for elementary, secondary, higher secondary and matriculation schools in a block.
“AEEOs cannot be made BEOs as they are only middle school heads or graduate teachers who cannot be authorised to supervise secondary, higher secondary and matriculation education in a block,” Janardhanan said.
“Hence it is important that the subordinate service rules concerned be amended to ensure that current AEEOs do not suffer needlessly,” said S Ranganathan, president, Vocational Teachers Kazhagam.
With the posts of Inspectors of Matriculation Schools (IMS) and District Elementary Educational Officers (DEEO) also to be abolished, a top education department official, on condition of anonymity, conceded that the present officials could only be accommodated if the number of educational districts were to be increased.
While the restructuring move has been welcomed by the teaching fraternity, teacher associations want the government to carry out the new changes without the promotion chances of current officials being affected in any manner.
