The members also burnt portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CJI Dipak Misra and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The protest rally commenced from Mela Vasthachavadi and proceeded towards the airforce base. They were stopped by a police team led by DSP Jayachandran. While shouting slogans, committee members said that the Centre, instead of releasing water, sent central forces to threaten farmers in the delta region.

The protesters also attempted to overpower the police and intensified their sloganeering. They said Tamils are being lynched in Karnataka, their vehicles are being torched and the Karnataka government is doing nothing against those involve in such anti-social activities. But in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s government is not even permitting people to stage protests, even if in a non-violent way and is also penalising protesters, they said.

The protesters sat on the road and blocked vehicular movement at Tiruchy-Thanjavur bypass due to which traffic had to be stalled for about an hour. Later, the police arrested all the protesters. However, a few members burnt portraits of Modi, Misra and Gandhi and despite the cops trying to douse the fire, the area remained tense for a while.

While speaking to reporters, Coordinator of CRRC, P Maniarasan said, the Centre is being step motherly towards Tamil Nadu and thanks to them, the Cauvery delta- rice bowl of TN is gradually turning into a desert. “We will stall the activities of the Central government offices until the Cauvery delta region is announced as an agricultural protected zone,” Maniarasan noted.
