Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the building, state Handlooms Minister O S Manian said it would serve as retiring room for transport workers and would also house a canteen for workers.
The minister said the building was being constructed using the Local Area Development Fund allotted by Poompuhar MLA Paunraj.
On October 20, 2017, the roof of the building at the Porayar TNSTC office, which served as a retiring room for transport workers, collapsed, killing eight workers on the spot. Following the mishap, the building was demolished.
The minister also laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1.28-crore bridge across Veerachozhan near here, with aid from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.
