With ceaseless agitations against the project, the Gem Laboratories could not begin operations despite winning the bid for hydrocarbon extractions a year ago, hence the Gujarat-based company reportedly requested the government to allot another location to them. This news spread like wild fire after actor Vishal tweeted about it as well.

The large-scale protest at Neduvasal began in February 2017, soon after the Jallikattu stir. Based on assurance from the state government that the project would be dropped, the protest was withdrawn after 22 days. The second phase of protests started in March and lasted for 172 days. On Thursday morning, the people gathered at the protest venue and burst crackers.

Member of the protest committee, AT Palanivel, said that the village youth working in oil rigs in the gulf countries had explained the adverse effects of the project from their work experience and this had aggravated the situation. “This is a victory of our unity and relentless protests,” Palanivel note.
