Speaking at a kneel laying ceremony at Kunthukal in Rameswaram on Sunday, the minister accused the Fisheries Department AD Manikandan of acting against the interests of fishermen.

The minister said that during the ban period, the fishermen are given Rs 5000 as compensation by the State government but some fishermen in Rameswaram are not receiving it as rules cite that the boat owners are not entitled to the compensation amount.

“While all the fishermen are provided the remuneration in other districts of the State, Manikandan is the only official who did not listen to me. Even when he was the additional director in Mandapam, he did not listen to me and got transferred. He is still continuing the same in Rameswaram,” said the minister.

“I am saying this now because Fisheries Director Sameeran is present here and he should take steps to provide compensation for boat owners too. It is not your money but government’s money. Why are you denying it for the fishermen of my constituency? Because of you, there is a bad name for me among the fishermen,” said Minister.

However, Fisheries Director Sameeran appreciated Manikandan, Fisheries AD, for being straight forward. He also asked him to continue his good work and added that he would support him.
