Ryots welcome SC rap, unhappy about CMB
The farmers from the Cauvery delta districts expressed disappointment as nothing fruitful about the formation of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) came out during the hearing of the Tamil Nadu’s contempt petition on Thursday.

Though the farmers welcomed the Supreme Court’s strong censure to the Union government for its failure to draft the scheme under the section 6-A of Inter-State Water Disputes Act, they were disappointed as no mention about the key issue of formation of the CMB was made. “We were awaiting the May 3 hearing in the apex court with an expectation of a solution to the issue. But we are disappointed today,” Kakkarai R Sukumaran, a leader of farmers association said.
He said if the constitution of the CMB was further delayed it would create a question mark over the integrity of India. This may result in strengthening of the demand for the separate Tamil Nadu and the Union government has been pushing the situation towards that end, he cautioned.
Meanwhile, the farmers said that the stipulated 4 tmc might not reach the Cauvery delta districts even if it was released. However, the act of release of water would give an indication that the final order of the Supreme Court would be implemented, they said.
Similarly, PS Masilamani, state deputy secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association said the unusual delaying of the formation of the CMB by the BJP led Union government exemplifies its indifferent attitude towards Tamil Nadu and its people.
He also pointed out though the Karnataka government had to release 14.5 tmc this season, the apex court ordered only 4 tmc.
“We expect the Karnataka releases at least this quantum,” he said and added that a solution should be found on the next hearing scheduled on May 8.
