The first day witnessed as many as 6,370 students enrolling themselves for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) 2018, according to data recorded till 6 pm on Thursday.

TNEA sources told DT Next that of the total, 1,050 applicants registered through internet and rest of them enrolled in Engineering Admissions Facilitation Centres, which has been set up across all districts. According to him, students, who do not have access to internet, can approach their nearest facilitation centre and get themselves registered.

Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan inspected the functioning of various centres, which has experts to guide the students with the registration process and for scanning of certificates.

“The online registration process was very easy for me. I took less than half an hour to register,” said S Saravanan, an engineering aspirant seeking admission here. He said even his schoolmates sought admission through online, which could be done on the website tnea.ac.in. The Higher Education Department has established 42 such facilitation centres to help the students, who do not have access to internet facility.

The scanning and verification of original certificates of the applicants are also being done at the facilitation centres. The facilitation centres would provide the required support and guidance to the applicants, besides extending internet-enabled computer facilities. A booklet containing information about colleges would also be given to the applicants to prepare their choice list and the centres would also screen videos demonstrating how to use the TNEA portal during the various stages of counselling.

Applicants can use facilitation centres at different stages like registration of applications, providing college preferences and collection of allotment orders. Subsequently, a merit list will be prepared for the eligible applicants and will be published through the TNEA portal.

A week would be reserved for addressing applicants’ grievances after publication of the merit list. Special counselling sessions for students would also be held in Chennai. The online registration process will conclude on May 30, following which, the applicants would be put in groups based on a merit list and will be counselled in rounds.
