The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose closed the petition after observing that water being a basic amenity and human right, ought to be taken care of by the state. It also closed a related petition seeking to release drinking water to Odaittur after directing the government to ensure that water is released to the area.

The Lower Bhavani Farmers’ Federation, one of the stakeholders in the Bhavanisagar dam irrigation system, had submitted that of the 2.07 lakh acres under the LBP, the extent was divided into “odd turn”, consisting of 1.03 lakh acres, and ‘even turn”, of another 1.03 lakh acres for the purposes of distribution of water for irrigation.
