According to police, Chellammal (80), a daily wager from Negamam near Pollachi, who was sleeping in her house, suffered serious injuries after it collapsed on Tuesday.
Neighbours on hearing her screams rushed Chellammal to the Pollachi Government Hospital, where she died without responding to treatment.
Villagers claimed that most of the houses built by the government in the area have become weak. They said the old houses should be replaced with new ones.
In a similar incident, Kalamani (40), wife of Ramasamy (45), a daily wager, sustained grievous injuries after the asbestos roofing of their house in Coimbatore crashed while she was sleeping. Kalamani was taken to a private hospital in Sirumugai for treatment.
Heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds also uprooted several trees and caused power outage in many places across the western region.
In Nilgiris, two big trees fell on the Ooty-Mysore Road leading to traffic disruptions. In Tirupur, more than 5,000 plantain crops were damaged as strong winds swept through Avinashi and surrounding areas in Tirupur district.
However, the rains did bring a much-needed respite for people from the sweltering heat. Farmers rejoiced as the showers came after a prolonged spell of dry weather.
S Panneerselvam, professor and head of Agro Climate Research Centre at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) said the sky would remain cloudy and rains may continue for two more days.
“Heavy showers are expected in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode districts in the coming days. Farmers can take up agricultural activity and save water in their farms,” he said.
