Nilgiris district SP Mural Rambha distributed the passes to a few residents at Charring Cross on Friday. He said that many arterial roads have been made one ways to prevent congestion during tourist season.
Due to the change in traffic routes locals might have to take a detour to reach their destinations. Therefore, they were provided with special passes which can be availed from police stations by submitting vehicle documents and residential proofs. Vehicles carrying such passes will be allowed to proceed even on one ways. The stickers were released in three colours, yellow for Udhagamandalam, blue for Coonoor and pink for Gudalur. A total of 10,000 passes have been issued.
During weekends, around 300 home guards have been roped in from Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode districts to regulate traffic. “If there is a heavy flow of vehicle from Mettupalayam to Coonoor, then about 40 per cent of the vehicles will be diverted through Kothagiri route,” the SP said.
