Stop tarnishing image of University, VC warns staff, pensioners
P Chelladurai, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), had issued stern warning to the staff, who bring bad name by staging protest against the institution. Even retired employees were warned by the VC that their pension would be withheld, if they resorted to or participated in agitations against the university.
Madurai
The MKU came under fire from various quarters following the leak of an audio of suspended assistant professor, Nirmala Devi from Virudhunagar district, in which she was trying to convince girl students to extend favour to ‘higher officials’ of university.
Condemning the incident, various organisations, including fora in which university staff were members, staged protests. The agitators also alleged that the Nirmala case was only a tip of the iceberg and corruption was rampant in several departments of the university.
Murali, former Principal of Madurai College in Madurai, and also the secretary of ‘Save MKU Coalition’, made scathing remarks on university officials.
He said that in the last 10 years all appointments were made only based on payment of cash. Meanwhile, a section of teaching staff too staged protest in front of university. All these incidents took a toll on the image of the university.
Upset over the allegations made by those who were associated with university itself, the Vice-Chancellor intervened into issue and issued a stern warning.
In the recent disciplinary committee meeting Chelladurai said that there was no second thought that those who were involved in Nirmala Devi scandal should be punished but that does not mean people can defame the institution in the name of protests and press meets.
Mischief mongers would be identified and serious action would be taken against them. Even pensioners, who indulge in such acts would be penalised, Chelladurai warned.
Karuppasamy in CB-CID custody
Karuppasamy, one of the two persons named by Nirmala Devi, during inquiry, was taken into custody by the CB-CID on Thursday for interrogation.
He had surrendered in Madurai court, on Wednesday. The CB-CID moved a petition seeking 10-day custody of Karuppasamy. However, the court granted only four days of custody.
