It is just tip of the iceberg: Save MKU forum
The scandal involving ex-assistant professor Nirmala Devi is just the tip of an iceberg as it was of multifaceted nature and involved a network of issues, which had been prevailing for at least 10 years at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), said R Murali, secretary, Save MKU Coalition, in Madurai on Wednesday.

Addressing media persons, Murali claimed that the present scandal should not be viewed in isolation as it represented the corruption that has been at the helm of MKU for a much longer period covering the last three vice-chancellors of the university.
In the last 10 years, the university system in Tamil Nadu has witnessed a constant decline in terms of integrity, ethics and qualification of vice-chancellors resulting in widespread corruption at various levels, including the appointment of teaching staff, he alleged.
However, the Santhanam Committee which was appointed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit does not have real powers to investigate. The Governor was also named by Nirmala Devi in her telephonic conversation and therefore, the formation of such a committee lacks merit. A committee appointed by the High Court alone would have the mandate to inquire even the Governor.
“There are many distinguished educationists in the state such as former MKU Vice-Chancellor, Vasanthi Devi, and retired Judges Chandru and Hariparandhaman. They could have been appointed for a fair probe into the scandal,” said Murali.
