In the video, doing rounds on social media, Gnanasekaran, Head, Department of Tamil in Bharathiar University is seen taking a bundle of Rs 1,000 notes from an unidentified aspirant.

The man asks how the interview is likely to go. To this, Gnanasekaran replies that he had spoken to the Vice Chancellor and asks for the payment. He then receives the cash bundles and is heard saying that it will be handed over to the V-C.

It is not known when the cash was offered by the job aspirant. However, the transaction may have happened be-fore demonetisation as it was a bundle of scrapped notes.

In the video, Gnanasekaran is seen in a casual T-shirt and tracks indicating that it may not have been the university premises. The university has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently as only a few months ago, suspended Vice Chancellor A Ganapathy was caught taking bribe at his residence from a job aspirant.

When asked, Gnanasekaran denied taking money from anyone assuring placements.  “I was also shocked to see the video. It’s not taken any time now, but not sure when it was shot. This must be a conspiracy by someone to trap me in the bribery case involving former Vice Chancellor A Ganapathy,” he said. “I used to give money on credit to many people. It could be one such video of me receiving my money back. Even during the arrest of the Vice Chancellor, workers in my house burnt garbage in front of the house. It was misconstrued and rumours were spread that important documents were set on fire,” he said.

The professor added that he would take legal action against those who spread wrong information. Vigilance sleuths said they would probe the matter.
