Kamal Haasan plans mock gram sabha to mark 25 years of panchayats
Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan is set to hold a mock gram sabha on April 24 at the party’s office headquarters on Eldams Road. Kamal will interact with around 70 members of the party as well as volunteers from different backgrounds and walks of life.

“25 years ago, on April 24, history was made when constitutional status was granted to two very important local governance institutions - 73rd (Panchayats) and 74th (Municipalities) Amendments,” said a statement from the party, adding that Kamal wishes to celebrate these amendments by hosting a mock gram sabha and discuss how such an occasion can pave the way for empowerment of people.
“The idea behind such a project is to do away with the concept of hierarchy altogether and ensure that everyone participating is on an equal level. Everyone will be sitting on the same level. Questions can be asked to the leader on every topic – to ensure there is accountability and responsibility for actions,” says a source from the party.
They added, “In a gram sabha, usually, budget for the welfare activities are discussed as well and resolutions are passed. So, the idea is to mimic this completely – Kamal Haasan is holding this in the hope that the concept is appreciated – and that more such gram sabhas are held by his followers in the future.”
The event will also shed more light on Kamal’s policies that he touched upon during his Tiruchy public meeting earlier in April.
Meanwhile, advocate C Rajasekharan, who was included in the list of 15 key members released by Makkal Needhi Maiam when the party was launched, has reportedly left the outfit. Though MNM hasn’t released any statement, it is believed that Rajasekharan wants to pursue his law career independently.
