High tides inundate coastal villages, fishermen stay away from seas

Rough conditions and high tides, as forecast by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), forced fishermen of country boats, tourists and local visitors to stay away from beaches on Saturday. Many coastal areas in southern districts were inundated by the surging sea water.

INCOIS, a Central government agency, had issued an alert to nine coastal states, including Tamil Nadu, warning that the sea would be rough and tides might rise to 11 feet. The alert, sounded on Friday, cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea.

As the ban period for fishing is currently in place, mechanised vessels can’t enter the sea and fishermen on country boat were asked not to go into the sea.  Heeding the warning, more than 10,000 country-boats were anchored in the various coasts from Rameswaram to Kanniyakumari.

Because of the unusual marine condition, water entered many coastal hamlets in Ramanathapuram and Kanniyakumari districts.

In Kanniyakumari district, the high tide brought down a retention wall that was built to prevent intrusion of sea water into Mandaikadu coastal village. Similarly, several other villages like Thingalsandhai and Kottipadu were also inundated.

In Kanyakumari, ferry services to Vivekananda Rock and Tiruvalluvar statue were stopped because of the rough sea. Several tourists, who were on the summer vacation break, expressed disappointment as they were not allowed near the sea.

Like the fishermen, tourists too kept off the sea. Devotees visiting the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram were not allowed to take bath in Agni Theertham. Policemen posted on the site constantly issued warnings to devotees about the rough sea.

Elsewhere, Dhanushkodi and Arichalmunai point wore a deserted look as tourist vehicles were not allowed to both the points. Revenue department officials kept a constant watch on the sea condition in Dhanushkodi.
