According to police, the victim R Thangaraj, a welding worker and also a BJP cadre from Rathinapuri had embraced another religion in 1994. “Still he continued to be a member of the BJP, in which he held a party post in Corporation ward 50 earlier,” police said. On Thursday, Radhakrishnan, 41 hailing from the same neighbourhood, accompanied by his two friends picked up a quarrel with Thangaraj alleging that he is brainwashing Hindus to embrace another religion.
Then Radhakrishnan attacked Thangaraj with a sickle in full public view near Gandhi Nagar in Sivanandha Colony and fled away.
The public rushed Thangaraj, who suffered attack injuries on his shoulders and head to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). He is said to be out of danger. The Rathinapuri police registered a case and arrested Radhakrishnan, while a search is on to nab the two others. This incident triggered tension as a group of persons from a different faith gathered in CMCH condemning the assault.
