The data was provided in response to the 25 queries raised by Justice N Kirubakaran to ascertain the reasons for the increase in sexual offences against women.Â
The judge, on perusing the report submitted by Maheswaran, Assistant Inspector General of Police, said since 2007, the state has lagged in the rate of conviction of such heinous crimes. It was worse in 2016, were the all India rate stood at 25.5 per cent and the state recorded 19 per cent, Justice N Kirubakaran added.Â
Justice Kirubakaran said that a response from the Centre was a must as such crimes are happening across the country making women and children suffer. The judge later put off the case to April 23.
