They called for the fans to avoid the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 10 at the MA Chidambaram stadium to show solidarity for the protests across the state.

Directors Bharathiraja, Thangar Bachan, Selvamani, Ameer, V Sekar, Vetrimaran, Ram and Gowthaman and actor Sathyaraj came together to announce the formation of Tamizhar Kalai Ilakkiya Panpaatu Peravai. The collective is envisioned as a platform for like-minded people to gather and fight for the cause of the Tamil people and take up issues that affect the state.

Bharathiraja addressed the press and berated the BCCI for scheduling IPL matches in the city despite the heightened tension in recent weeks. He said that the IPL will be a distraction at a time when the youth are focused on the Cauvery issue.

“Holding IPL matches here now is akin to celebrating when there has been a death in your neighbour’s house.”

Director Sekar stressed on the need for unity among the people of Tamil Nadu. He said, “We lack unity, which is why we need a platform to bring protesters together. The Kannadigas unite whenever there is an issue related to Cauvery regardless of whichever party they support. The common man and actors and politicians fight together there.”

Thangar Bachan leveled veiled criticism against the DMK working president MK Stalin for his protest marches saying that it was for publicity. He also hit out at actor Silambarasan for his view that Karnataka must take whatever water they need and provide the rest to Tamil Nadu. He called on regional political parties not to align with national parties.

Selvamani reasoned that they were calling for the boycott of IPL and not films as fans protesting a cricket match will have more impact across the nation.

The purpose of the new forum was not elucidated beyond the reassurance that the members did not have any vested political interests.
