As part of the nationwide protest Congress workers in Puducherry on Monday observed a fast against caste violence, communalism and non-functioning of the Parliament at the Swadeshi Cotton Mills premises here.

The fast, which began at 9 am wrapped up at 5 pm. AICC President Rahul Gandhi called for the fast to prevent caste and communal violence and bring peace and tranquillity in the country.
Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, PWD Minister A Namassivayam and functionaries of different wings of the Congress participated in the fast. There were communal clashes in different parts of the country, he said. He added that the congress leaders and functionaries called the day long fast as per the call given by the AICC to bring to focus the failure of the BJP led NDA government.
Narayanasamy took a dig at the Centre saying that it had failed to deliver the promises given to the people during the run up to the Lok Sabha polls in 2014.
He also said that in the four-year regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the people had no security because of communal and caste violence.
He highlighted the issue of Dalits and minorities deliberately being attacked. “A peculiar situation is prevailing in the country as the ruling party itself is stalling the proceedings of the Parliament,” he said adding that the central government is a “non-functioning” government.
Representatives of the DMK, CPI, VCK, Puthiya Neethi Katchi, Manitha Neya Makkal katchi and among others also participated in the fast.
