Don’t like crowds? Yelagiri could be the go-to place this summer
For residents of arid Tamil Nadu, especially at the advent of another long summer, Yelagiri in Vellore district perhaps offers a pocket-friendly and pleasant getaway.
Vellore
Here’s why you could choose it over its more popular but congested sisters – Ooty and Kodaikanal or even Yercaud – this summer. What’s more you can enjoy adventure sports too in the hill station
Easy access
Yelagiri is about 210 km from Chennai and it can be reached faster from the northern parts of the state; the Jolarpettai railway station, through which several trains from Chennai pass through, is only 19 km from Yelagiri
All-weather destination
Mild for most of the year due to its elevation and as it is surrounded by hills on almost all the sides
Population - 4,409 people (2011 census)
Elevation at which Yelagiri is located - 3,441 ft
14 Villages together form the Yelagiri region
Adventure sports
Hang-gliding, rock-climbing, boating and trekking can be organised for tourists and visitors
Not to miss sights
- Vainu Bappu Solar Observatory: The biggest solar observatory is at Kavalur in the Javadi Hills, about 25 km from Yelagiri
- Punganur Lake, where boating can be undertaken; a Forest Department Herbal Farm near the water body is a famous attraction
- Velavan Temple, a Lord Murugan shrine on one of the highest point in the hills; Swamimalai Hill is also another destination for the spiritually inclined
- Fruit Farm, located at Athavanur and Nilavur villages nearby
- Jalagamparai Waterfalls on Attaru river that flows through the hills
- A trekking route is available to the waterfalls from the hills
Summer festival
Organised by various government agencies every year
Poor man’s Ooty
Was how Yelagiri was referred to, somewhat condescendingly, maybe as it provided an inexpensive option for the general public.
