Governor’ finds place in voters’ list for co-operative polls

In an irony of sorts that may also expose alleged irregularities in cooperative polls under way in the state, the ‘Governor’ has been included in the voters’ list released by the K. 1691 Kalapatti Town Co-Operative Credit Society in Coimbatore on Sunday.

Without providing the name, the voters’ list just says ‘Governor, Tamil Nadu’ as voter number 119. Curiously, it mentions ‘Government’ in the column for father and ‘Tamil Nadu’ as his residence. The issue has come to light a day before candidate nominations for the polls on Monday. The members, who found ‘Governor’ in the list along with their names, were surprised and sought to highlight it.

When questioned, Kalapatti Town Co-operative Credit Society secretary Nataraj said the society was formed in 1965.

“There are about 3,479 members in the society and the voters’ list released on Sunday has the names of about 3,381 voters. Of them, the ‘Governor’ appears as voter 119. In 1979, the government paid a deposit of Rs 5,000 to the society. Since then, the Governor has been included in the voters’ list as one of its members. And, this year too it has appeared,” he said.

Elections are being conducted for 765 co-operative societies in Coimbatore since earlier this month. The controversy has emerged in the wake of DMK and other parties demanding cancellation of the co-operative society elections alleging widespread irregularities.
