    According to the police, a family of nine from Bengaluru had gone on a Kerala visit in their sports utility vehicle and were returning to Bengaluru through the Sengottai border. 

    When the car, driven by a person called Sangana Gowda, a mechanic with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, was nearing the government seed farm at Kovilur on the Sengottai-Madurai NH around 1.50 am, the driver apparently lost control and rammed into a lorry that was coming in the opposite direction. The lorry was laden with sugar and was coming from Ulundurpettai. In the incident, the car was ripped apart as it got stuck under the lorry. Six persons, who were sleeping in the car, died on the spot, while two others died later. 

    The deceased were identified as Sangana Gowda (38), Mahesh (35), driver  with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, his wife, Rathinam (30), Kalavathi (35), wife of  Lakshminarayanan, her daughter, Dikshita (14), Dhara (25), a technical staff with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Praveen (11), son of Sangana  Gowda and Lakshminarayanan (40). 

    Praveen and Lakshminarayanan sustained fatal injuries and died at the Government Rajaji Hospital here. Shanta (34), wife of Sangana Gowda, sustained grievous injuries. Her condition was serious, said the police.
